Success doesn’t just walk through your front door while you’re on the couch eating snacks. While some people get lucky with the lottery or are born into a head start, you can’t build a life on “maybe.” Even if you feel like a slow learner or the odds are stacked against you, it doesn’t mean success is out of reach. It just means you have to be more intentional.

Here are three ways to shift the odds in your favor. Put these to use, and you will see your life start to move in a different direction.

1. The Blueprint (A Goal Without a Plan is Just a Dream)

You need a plan. Period. I don’t care how small the goal seems or how unbelievable it feels—write it down.

2. The Mindset (Tunnel Vision)

My favorite piece of wisdom is this: “You can’t change your life by just changing your actions; you can only change your life if you change your way of thinking.” If you wake up with doubt, you’ve already lost the day. If you feed into the negativity around you, you’ll never have the fuel to get where you’re going. Negativity is part of the process—it shows up on every journey. You have to develop tunnel vision. You have to be mentally prepared to ride the highs and the lows. If you can master your emotions, you’ll be just fine.

3. The Work Ethic (The 100-Hour Rule)

A plan is useless without the engine of action. Elon Musk famously says: “Work like hell. Put in 80 to 100 hour weeks. This improves the odds of success. If other people are putting in 40 hours and you’re putting in 100, you will achieve in four months what it takes them a year to achieve.”

If you have a goal to save $5,000 in two years and your current check isn’t cutting it, you need to find more “gears.” You might need a second job, a side hustle, or a digital store. You need a work ethic that borders on crazy.

The Bottom Line

If you can implement these three things—The Blueprint, The Mindset, and The Work Ethic—you can reach your goals regardless of the odds. The journey won’t be easy, but the hard times are the “rent” you pay for success. Don’t be afraid to go out and take what you want.
