Have you ever found yourself daydreaming about where you’d be today if you knew then what you know now? It’s the question we all ask ourselves. If you could go back and give your younger self a few “cheat codes” for life, what would they be? Between the wasted money, the missed opportunities, and the fear of what others thought, most of us took the long way to success.
But what if the basics were different? What if our schools provided future-changing knowledge instead of just textbooks? I believe there are three things that need a massive emphasis in our schools to give the next generation a real head start.
1. The Financial Engine: Savings & Credit
These two go hand-in-hand, and the earlier you start, the more powerful they become. Imagine if students were taught to manage a small part-time job or even an allowance with a “pay yourself first” mindset. Even better—imagine if they were taught the mechanics of credit.
- The Dream: A student could graduate high school at 18 with a 725 credit score and a solid savings account.
- The Reality: Instead of starting adulthood in debt, they’d be starting with a reputation that allows them to buy assets and build wealth from day one.
2. The Professional Backup: Trade Skills
In our grandparents’ day, trades were a staple of education. We need to bring that emphasis back. Whether it’s auto mechanics, carpentry, or plumbing, learning a trade gives a young person a “legit” backup plan that no one can take away.
- The Power: A trade means you can always make money without waiting for someone to hire you. You can fix a car, renovate a house, or handle a plumbing emergency.
- The Freedom: It provides a path to independence and removes the “excuse” for taking shortcuts in life. If you have a skill in your hands, you’ll never go hungry.
3. The Blueprint: Business Planning
Every student should walk across that graduation stage with a fully developed business plan.
- The Goal: Why just graduate with a diploma when you could graduate with a company?
- The Move: Having a game plan allows a young person to enter college or the workforce with a clear vision. If they feel strongly about their idea, they have the documentation ready to walk into a bank and apply for a business loan to launch their vision.
The Ultimate Head Start
Imagine the shift in our community if every graduate had a high credit score, a mastery of a trade, and a finished business plan. That is how you start adulthood with power. It means more independence, more job creation, and more money circulating in our neighborhoods. We can’t change the past, but by emphasizing these three pillars, we can absolutely change the future.
